The plant Humulus is a climber which can be found in swamps and in the hedges of our cultivated gardens. Being an important ingredient in beer, it is extensively cultivated commercially. Hops has a long history of use in Phytotherapy. It was listed in the US Pharmacopoeia from 1831 to 1916 as a sedative.

How It Works

Hops contain substances known as humulones and lupulones. These are broken down in the body to substances which have a distinct sedative effect on the nervous system. this effect is useful for insomnia, especially when combined with the herb Valerian.
Sedative herbs such as these are particularly effective when the causes of insomnia include nervous tension and anxiety.
