Description

This is a herb which is widely found across Europe. It is one of the oldest herbs in use and has been the subject of extensive research.

How It Works

The tranquilising action of Valerian has been attributed to a number of components, including a group of compounds known as valepotriates, which have been shown to possess an ability to calm the nerves.
Valerenic acid, found in Valerian, inhibits the breakdown of GABA, which is a chemical transmitter that decreases nervous system activity. Increasing GABA levels in this way helps people who find it hard to switch off and promotes good sleeping patterns.
In addition, a number of other constituents in Valerian have been shown to possess antispasmodic activity in muscles.
